The Petwo Lwa

Because the Petwo lwa can be fierce, they should be approached with caution. Some mistakenly refer to the Rada lwa as “good” and the Petwo as “evil.” This is misleading. The Rada lwa can be used to make malevolent magic, and the Petwo can heal and do beneficial workings. However, they are more forceful than the more easygoing Rada lwa. Vodouisants say the Rada are cooler and the Petwo are more hot. They can be great allies, but they can also burn you if you are not careful.

I have included only a sampling of Petwo lwa in this book. Many of these spirits are patrons of the secret societies like the Sanpwel and the Zobop. They are seen as powerful but demanding—and quick to take offense if they are not greeted in the appropriate manner or if they are called by one who presumes to approach them without the proper ceremonies. If you choose to become initiated, you may receive the introductions and passwords you need to greet them and work with them. The Petwo spirits I have listed here are hot and strong, but they are a bit more forgiving of error than some of the other Petwo, and they can be approached by a curious and respectful newcomer.
